Estonian composer Ülo Krigul (b. 1978) is an important figure on his country's music scene. He participates in many jazz and rock activities. He seems fascinated by elemental forces of nature reflected in the three works on this unusual disk. Scoring is for choir, orchestra and electronics, the latter rather gently used. The three pieces here focus on wind, light and water, and the composer's program notes describe his intentions. We may be sure these performances are exactly what the composer wanted. The recording was made August 2021 in Estonia's Methodist Church, Taillen. The BIS engineering beautifully captures the unusual sounds. Texts and translations are included. This is a unique issue, recommended for those looking for something new. You can sample it at YouTube, but for best effect hear it in multi-channel.
This new Bruckner release will be of interest to those who love that composer but, unfortunately, it is sabotaged by inadequate audio. Recordings were made live (although there are no audience sounds) October 5, 2021 in Jerwood Hall at LSO St. Luke's London. Engineers have provided a rather distant sound with poorly balanced brass and limited dynamic range. Sound is diffuse, the 5.1 channels do not impress. The real interest here is the second disk that contains some Bruckner oddities: discarded original versions of the scherzo and finale, the extended initial version of the andante, and the unabridged version of the finale. This set is releases at two-for-one price. And if you wish to experience this mighty Bruckner Symphony at its best, there are numerous others far superior. And check out the Pristine reissue of Wilhelm Furtwängler's legendary Vienna Philharmonic 1951 live recording.
